Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, 1)

The New York Times bestselling first book in a dark series that reimagines the Oz saga, from debut author Danielle Paige. Start at the beginning and discover your new series to binge!

My name is Amy Gumm--and I'm the other girl from Kansas. I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I've been trained to fight. And I have a mission: Remove the Tin Woodman's heart. Steal the Scarecrow's brain. Take the Lion's courage. And--Dorothy must die.

I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado--taking you with it--you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a road of yellow brick--but even that's crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

Dorothy Must Die was one of my most anticipated releases last year - but one I never go around to reading. For several reasons, to which I won't get into at the moment. However, one of my close blogger friends told me to give it a go - that I wouldn't regret it - so I did.

Dorothy Must Die had great potential to be amaze-balls. Which some aspects where, there were a few things that kept me from loving it.

What I loved? It was gory and ruthless. Call me morbid - but I love it when an author doesn't hold back when it comes to the nitty-gritty. There were a few scenes that gave me goosebumps and kind of grossed me out. But I loved it. I loved the twist of Oz. This is not the Oz we have come to know and love - and I ate it up! I also enjoyed Amy's character. Initially, she was hard to like and relate to, she was pretty selfish and naive. But she had a lot of character growth throughout the book.

What kept me from loving? Dorothy is one. Her character is written as a "queen bee" not an "evil princess" that took over Oz. She IS ruthless and cruel, but not on the level that I hoped would come about. She acted like a spoiled brat 99% of the time. It didn't just didn't FIT.

This book was on the longer side, and it felt that way too. There were about 150 pages - give or take - that were so freaking boring and dragged. Also, I was disappointed with the ending.

Overall - it was okay. I haven't decided if I will read The Wicked Will Rise - but it's possible.
