The politics in the Dominican Republic lead to a loveless teen marriage and a big move to NYC in the 1960’s. The protagonist jumps from one dictatorship to another. This is an immigrant coming of age story. Happy endings only show up in fairy tales. Love, loss, family, becoming a woman - these are the themes explored in this novel.

Absolutely breathtaking. I love this book because it brings to light the sacrifices Dominican women have made for their families. It’s heartbreaking, and for what it’s worth I feel closer to my grandmother because of this story. This is a must read.
