Dark Matter: A Novel

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Solidly good book, gives me midnight library vibes with a giant sci-fi star trek level fuckery that staves off the depression and tears giving it more of a philosophical ethics feel than existential.
I don't understand 5-D thinking though, I understood up until the 4-D but that was enough to really enjoy it!

Tumbles you into a fever dream of time travel that at points makes you question what reality truly is.

This book was so unique! How crazy would it be to encounter yourself and view your life in alternative ways?! I liked the storyline of this book a lot, especially because I don’t usually find myself gravitating towards this genre. The whole plot was my favorite thing about this book. I really enjoyed the main character’s wife, Daniela & their son, Charlie. They’re my favorite characters because they had to live with an alternate version of their husband/dad & were quickly able to recognize the real Jason when they found him (after some explaining). Jason is such a smart character for creating this ability to access parallel versions of his life, but the other versions of him bothered me as they tried to take over the main character’s life. I’ll definitely read more of Blake Crouch’s work.
