Dark Harvest

Soon to be a major motion picture!

Norman Partridge's Bram Stoker Award-winning novel, Dark Harvest, is a powerhouse thrill-ride with all the resonance of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery."

"A major talent." --Stephen King

Halloween, 1963. They call him the October Boy, or Ol' Hacksaw Face, or Sawtooth Jack. Whatever the name, everybody in this small Midwestern town knows who he is. How he rises from the cornfields every Halloween, a butcher knife in his hand, and makes his way toward town, where gangs of teenage boys eagerly await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare. Both the hunter and the hunted, the October Boy is the prize in an annual rite of life and death.

Pete McCormick knows that killing the October Boy is his one chance to escape a dead-end future in this one-horse town. He's willing to risk everything, including his life, to be a winner for once. But before the night is over, Pete will look into the saw-toothed face of horror--and discover the terrifying true secret of the October Boy.

I wish I’d been able to read this one in October but my hold didn’t come through until January! Even though it was out of season I still enjoyed this unique horror story. I listened to the audiobook for Dark Harvest and the narrator was very intense, which suited the tone of the novel very well. Dark Harvest is about a small town with an eerie Halloween tradition and plenty of secrets. The book is rather short, the audiobook was only 5 hours, and since it is so short I don’t really want to say more than that. The secret behind the October Boy tradition wasn’t hard to figure out but that doesn’t take away any of the mystery of the story. Dark Harvest was unique and felt like an original creepy, tale you want to hear around Halloween. The only reason this wasn’t a 5 star read for me was because I felt like too much was left unexplained. I really wanted to know how this tradition started and why but those answers are never revealed. Despite my lingering questions I enjoyed Dark Harvest’s harvest story and look forward to seeing more from this author.
