Whelp. I am at a complete loss for words to describe my experience with Blackbird. The first thing that pops into my mind? DIFFERENT.

Lets discuss the writing. Second person narration is one that is truly unique and takes an amazing author really make it work for their story. The question is, did it in Blackbird? I say yes, but I will admit that it wont work for everybody. It takes awhile to get use to it, and from someone who is more character driven, it was difficult to really invest in the character(s), verses the plot.

We follow a girl who wakes up with no memory of her life, doesn’t know her name but knows that someone is trying to kill her. It was fast paced, intense and completely off the wall but that’s what makes it more interesting. I find this odd, because just the other day I was frustrated by an outlandish and unrealistic plot – but with Blackbird, I rather enjoyed it. Call me consistent, hmm?

There were few a few other POV thrown in there was were from other characters, is third person, and I would have rather went without these. If I don’t know what is going on, it makes the revelations and plot twists more interesting and intense. I get the intention – to give us just enough information to see where the plot is going, and a little bit more into what was going on, but for me, it complicated things. Really, because I hate knowing what’s going on when the main character doesn’t.

You don’t know what is going on half the time, who “Sunny” really is, what she was and who/if someone is trying to kill her. I can’t even tell you how many times I thought she was making everything up and hallucinating. The romance is the book felt rushed and kind of insta lovely, but I actually like Ben so I let it go.

Another thing that I really enjoyed were the dreams that “Sunny” had. Are they memories? Dreams? I DON’T KNOW.

Overall, I really enjoyed Blackbird. I was a little peeved about the cliffhanger ending though, and really wish I knew a little bit more about her past before heading into the second book. Still, such a uniquely written, intense, action packed story full of twists that will keep guessing. I recommend it.
