All the Murmuring Bones

For fans of Naomie Novik and Katherine Arden, a dark gothic fairy tale from award-winning author Angela Slatter.

'Harrowing and beautiful, this is the grim, fairy-tale gothic you've been waiting for' CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN, New York Times bestselling author of Ararat

Long ago Miren O'Malley's family prospered due to a deal struck with the mer: safety for their ships in return for a child of each generation. But for many years the family have been unable to keep their side of the bargain and have fallen into decline. Miren's grandmother is determined to restore their glory, even at the price of Miren's freedom.

A spellbinding tale of dark family secrets, magic and witches, and creatures of myth and the sea; of strong women and the men who seek to control them.

What an utterly exquisite read! It's dark and luxurious and full of magic and blood. Anybody familiar with Slatter's fairytales from her other works will be delighted to find them mentioned inside All the Murmuring Bones. Her writing is deeply sensual and I was enchanted by the practical, casual mentions of mer, ghosts, and other beings as just another day in the life of the youngest O'Malley. This book is like starlight in glimmering pools. I'm so glad I read it.

This is deliciously horrifying and lovely. Took me several chapters to warm up to the tale (I thought it was just atmospheric and nothing would happen!) but then I couldn't stop until it finished, and there was no way to predict what turns it would take. My favorite book so far this year.
