MY THOUGHTS:
I’ve adopted a new mantra for this year’s (2018 included) reading: I didn’t realize I needed this book in my life. A Spark of White Fire, is near the top of that list.
Honestly, I’m not familiar with the Mahabharata – which I must remedy ASAP! – so I wasn’t familiar with the foundation of the story. But space opera with God/Goddesses, whole Kingdoms on ships, political intrigue? SOLD.
I fell in love with his book from the very first page. The writing is just magical. There’s a lot of world building and intricate plotting, yet it’s not confusing and really easy to follow. There were however, several times I went back to re-read passages because Sangu is a master at foreshadowing.
Esme is the type of character I love the most. Their intentions MAY be good – but their execution may not be. She’s tough, yet empathetic. Mean, yet kind. She has swirls of gray all over her and love it. Generally speaking, she handled all the revelations with grace. Her confusion about her family, and its history, was a little more… than she expected.
As with Esme, a lot of the characters aren’t either GOOD or BAD. Most of the time, you are just as confused as Esme on who to trust and who to believe. There is a start of a romance, and I see this developing more in the books to come.
My one and only small gripe, would be the pacing. While I was swept away into this world, it took a big for it to build.
Overall – I loved this book. Riddled with twists & turns, A Spark of White Fire will leave you desperate for the sequel. I highly recommend it!
