A Dog's Purpose: A Novel for Humans (A Dog's Purpose, 1)

A Dog's Purpose--the #1 New York Times bestseller and major motion picture--is a perfect gift to introduce dog lovers to this wonderful series.

Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog's Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love.

The family film told from the dog's perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. A Dog's Purpose is produced by Gavin Polone (Zombieland, TV's Gilmore Girls). The film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media will be distributed by Universal Pictures. Screenplay by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Audrey Wells and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky.

Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

Bailey's story continues in A Dog's Journey, the charming New York Times and USA Today bestselling direct sequel to A Dog's Purpose.

UPDATE (DAY AFTER INITIAL RATING/REVIEW): I don't usually do this but after feeling the need to relay the contents of this book to my husband and crying through most of that, it hit me how much I enjoyed this book and how much it affected me. Again, I'm more surprised than anyone at my strong feelings about it. I'm bumping it to 5 Stars.

--------------------------------

Disclaimer #1: I am probably the intended target for a book like this to sucker punch. I have three dogs (a two-year-old black lab, a nine-year-old husky, and a two-year-old Australian shepherd mix that was meant to be a short term foster but ended up being ours because it turns out I'm terrible at fostering but great at adopting). I expected to be emotionally manipulated.

Disclaimer #2: Despite having three dogs, I'm actually more of a cat person.

I unintentionally read this in one day. Unintentionally because I didn't even know if I would like this.

At around 100 pages in, I was scoffing and complaining because I was irritated that the dog was "learning" words like snow and skunk yet knew the word for horse immediately upon meeting one. I worried that I was going to be nothing more than annoyed by this book. Animal narrators can easily turn into something hokey or childish.

Yet somewhere along the way, I stopped being irritated about what the dog did and did not know the names of/words for.

And then I cried. And then I cried again. And then a couple more times. I kind of lost count. I wanted to know what happened. I wanted to know what the next life would be. I wanted to know the next breed, the next owner, the next purpose.

This was absolutely darling and more emotional than I had anticipated. I didn't even really feel emotionally manipulated because it wasn't over the top heart wrenching. It was the small things that really would bring an animal lover to tears because of the simple love and pureness of animals.
