1st to Die: A Novel (Women's Murder Club, No 1)

Four crime-solving friends face off against a killer in San Francisco in the Women's Murder Club novel that started James Patterson's thrilling series.

Each one holds a piece of the puzzle: Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector in the San Francisco Police Department, Claire Washburn is a medical examiner, Jill Bernhardt is an assistant D.A., and Cindy Thomas just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle.

But the usual procedures aren't bringing them any closer to stopping the killings. So these women form a Women's Murder Club to collaborate outside the box and pursue the case by sidestepping their bosses and giving each other a hand. The four women develop intense bonds as they pursue a killer whose crimes have stunned an entire city. Working together, they track down the most terrifying and unexpected killer they have ever encountered--before a shocking conclusion in which everything they knew turns out to be devastatingly wrong.
Full of the breathtaking drama and unforgettable emotions for which James Patterson is famous, 1st to Die is the start of the #1 New York Times bestselling series of crime thrillers.

I'm a murder mystery fan so I decided to grab this. It's an interesting background, but the downside is that it has adult scenes. Don't read if you're under 18!

“What is the worst thing anyone has ever done? Phillip Campbell asked himself again, heart pounding in his chest.” Quick Summary Lindsay Boxer, a police inspector for San Francisco, has excelled at her job for six years but faces new challenges when she gets sick and must solve a tough case. Her diagnosis makes her feel vulnerable and weak, so she can’t handle the murder scene at a luxury hotel as well as she would have liked. The female victim was in her wedding dress when she was murdered, which makes Lindsay think about how young and hopeful the girl must have been before being killed by someone else. Immediately after the beginning of their investigation, Lindsay and Chris are told that they will work together. Lindsay is demoted from lead on the case to second because she’s not a good mediator like Chris. However, as they work together, she learns he’s a great cop who only wants to find the killer. Together they begin searching for motives among the couples’ friends and family members by researching everything about them including their business dealings. As the case proves more complicated than Lindsay is willing to handle alone, she forms an alliance with three other women who understand what it’s like to work in a male-dominated field. Thoughts James Patterson’s fast pace and short chapters are what makes his work so enjoyable to read.
I loved the suspenseful yet ultimately satisfying plot and character development. Patterson reveals enough information at a time to keep the reader aware of what’s happening, but nothing more - which is one of the reasons this book was such a page-turner. Some scenes are pretty gruesome and can be very unsettling to sensitive readers. Regardless, it is most certainly worth reading. Who this book is for With much more to it than just the crime, 1st to Die is a rollercoaster of emotion and nail-biting suspense. Fans of intricately thought-out thrillers will love this novel by the mastermind James Patterson.
